While it may seem scary, you don’t need to worry about your dental emergency. We at Artistry Smile Center can walk you through what to expect from your treatment. To that end, here’s what you’ll experience:

  • A Same-Day Visit – We’ll set your visit for the earliest open time once you call; we may even see you the same day! From there, our team can provide care tips over the phone.
  • An Emergency Exam – When you arrive for care, our dentists will first perform a quick (but precise) oral exam. This step lets us confirm your problem and how to ease your pain.
  • Review of Findings – We’ll share our findings with you after the exam, as well as some helpful procedures. Our team will also draft a treatment plan using your feedback, mentioning the relevant cost(s) and time before you commit.
  • Proper Dental Care – We’ll quickly repair your grin when your treatment plan is ready. After all, our office has the proper skills and experience; you can trust you’ll get quality results. Our team will provide you with dental crowns, fillings, root canals, or whatever else your smile needs!

Keys to Preventing Dental Emergencies

Accidents happen from time to time. The good news is that our Columbus dental team will be here to help you – whether you have a small crack in your enamel from eating something crunchy or you completely knocked-out a tooth while participating in a sport. That said, our job as your dental team is also to help you reduce your risk of having a dental emergency. With this in mind, keep reading to learn a few tips and tricks we recommend!

Schedule a Dental Checkup and Cleaning Biannually

If you’re in pain – whether it’s minor discomfort or considerable sensitivity – we’re here to help. That said, you shouldn’t wait until your symptoms are unbearable to schedule an appointment. Instead, you should come to our office every six months so we can routinely check for tooth decay, periodontal disease, oral cancer, damaged restorations, and the like. At these appointments, we will also remove harmful substances, like plaque, in an effort to keep your teeth and gums healthy.

Brush Your Teeth Twice a Day

In order to reduce your chances of plaque buildup and, in turn, painful cavities, you need to commit to a solid oral hygiene regimen at home. That starts with using a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoridated toothpaste to brush your teeth twice a day. Remember, you need to do so for a full two minutes each time in order to thoroughly remove food particles and other debris from the surface too!

Important note: You need to floss and rinse with mouthwash too!

Wear a Mouthguard During Sports

While participating in sports, it’s possible for a rogue ball to hit you in the mouth or someone’s elbow to make forceful contact with your jaw. That’s why it’s so important that you wear a mouthguard, even if you haven’t run into any issues yet! This dental device may be small, but it can save you from a painful, sudden dental injury. So, if you don’t already have one, schedule an appointment with us so we can have a custom one made for you.

Eat Lots of Nutrient-Dense Foods

Remember, what you eat impacts your oral health. That’s why we recommend adding lots of nutrient-dense foods to your diet! Fresh fruits, healthy fats, and raw vegetables are packed with the vitamins, nutrients, and minerals your body needs to keep your jawbone strong, your teeth healthy, and your gums infection-free.

Don’t Use Your Teeth as Tools

Although it may seem convenient in the moment, do NOT use your teeth to remove plastic wrapping. You also shouldn’t use them to remove bottle caps, trim your nails, or break apart ice cubes. This is one of the easiest ways to wind up in our emergency treatment chair with a painful injury, like a large crack in your enamel.

Dental Emergency FAQs

I just knocked out one of my teeth! What should I do?

First, you should call your emergency dentist in Upper Arlington at the Artistry Smile Center. It’s the quickest way to get the care that you need. Try to find the tooth and place it back into your mouth. If you can’t, be sure to keep it wet in a container of milk or saltwater until you can see us.

What is causing my severe toothache?

A constant throbbing or shooting pain in a tooth usually indicates that the sensitive nerve has been damaged. You should call us immediately! The longer you wait, the worse the pain will be, and we may even need to extract the tooth. If you get to us soon enough, we’ll be able to relieve your pain and save your smile.

Should I ever call 911 for a dental emergency?

Most of the time, no. Many hospitals/clinics will not have the personnel or equipment to handle emergency dental care. You’ll only be able to find those at a dental practice like the Artistry Smile Center. However, if you have injuries to other parts of your body that need immediate attention, be sure to head straight to your local emergency room first. After you are stable, you should still call us.
